The Bachelor / Master of Science enables graduates to carry out practical and scientific activities in the fields of diagnostics, biomedical research, development, and production. The work areas of molecular scientists include, for example:

  • Investigation laboratories:
Molecular diagnostics for medical, biotechnical, environmental and forensic issues

  • Clinics:
Molecular diagnostics in various clinical disciplines (internal medicine, paediatrics, human genetics, etc.)

  • Authorities:
Monitoring legal regulations, e.g., in investigative offices

  • Industry:
Basic biomedical research and development, quality control, production, and marketing, etc.

  • Research Institute:
Basic biomedical research at universities, institutes of the Max Planck Society, large research institutions, etc.

As a rule, life science academics require a doctorate in the natural sciences (in Germany: “Dr. rer. nat.”). The Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Medicine jointly offer the possibility of completing a doctorate in the field of molecular medicine. The academic title, “Doktor/in der Naturwissenschaften” (PhD in Natural Science) is awarded by the Faculty of Biology. Selected professors and private lecturers representing a research area in the field of molecular medicine, and who, as well, are involved in teaching in the molecular medicine study program, are eligible to supervise doctoral degrees.
